The context in which
the Transfiguration of the Lord takes place is important. Jesus is undoubtedly
disappointed and chides the disciples for their inability to grow up. Their
expectation of the Messiah did not match with what Jesus said and did. The
first message of the day is that it is in such hard contexts of life – in the
reality of our joys and sorrows, our successes and failures, in our sins – that
God reveal Himself and we have to encounter Him precisely in such raw realities
of our life. God the Father rarely speaks in the Gospel. His first statement at
Jesus’ baptism explains who Jesus is: “This is my beloved Son”. God has indeed
spoken similar words over us at our Baptism: ‘You are my beloved child’. Being
the Beloved of the Father is the core truth of our life. We need to build up
our life on this assuring, sacred voice within us. Not to get discouraged, but
rather, to always “look at the stars,” and remember that we are created for an
eternity of infinite joy. The Father’s second and final statement was at the
Transfiguration that indicates how He wants us to respond to His Son: “Listen
to Him.” If we wish to grow in holiness and be well-prepared to celebrate
Easter, the best way to do so is to spend Lent, listening to Jesus and be
transformed.
What gives the
ultimate support meaning to my life? Which are the voices I listen to and
follow? We too are in need of an experience of Transfiguration that would
clarify to us the fundamental questions of our life.

Gospel – reflection)
